The "Great Fire of March 2006" did more than burn some grass. It also destroyed several hundred metres of fenceline on our property and on a neighbour's adjoining property. As you can see below, the quality of that fence was not great to begin with (note lots of wooden separators), so as we were planning to replace some fences anyway, the fire just gave us a bit more to replace.
When we replaced it, we made sure we used mostly iron star pickets to make it a bit more fire resistant in the future..
The only places we used wooden posts was were we needed the strength and rigidity at corners and changes of direction.
We took the opportunity to fence off the creek on the western border. This was to keep browsing animals out of our property, and also to protent the creek from grazing animals if we decide to agist cattle in the coming years after the trees have grown a bit more.
We also took the opportunity to put in a new gate between ourselves and a neighbour's property, to provide easier emergency access to both properties in the future (to avoid having to cut fences in order to gain access to the neighbouring property for fire-fighting).
