Diary of a Plantation
Getting up to Scratch
When we decided to go tree farming, and after we had bought the block, we realised how little we really knew about tree farming!!

So we started talking to people (especialy John Woodley), and reading as much as we could find about tree farming. We were amazed at how much information was freely available on the internet. Some of the best sites we discovered can be found here.

But the best thing we did to increase our knowledge, and our network of like-minded people, was to attend a Master TreeGrower Program course (Green & Gold Tree Farms also provided some minor sponsorship for holding the course in the Taggerty region). The program, which covers the theme of Growing Trees for Conservation and Profit, was founded by the University of Melboune in 1996 and has been run in many different locations around Australia over the past ten years. The program conducted in the Taggerty district was organised by locals John Woodley and Ann Jelinek, with substantial help from Rowan Reid, the founder of the program. About 40 people attended the course over the four months of the course, turning up rain, hail or shine every second weekend for a full day of presentations and field visits. Everyone agreed that it was a fantastic way of getting an overview of farm forestry, and providing the stimulus for wanting to learn more.
