Diary of a Plantation
Species Selection and Layout
Following the site investigations, and extensive discussions between ourselves and Woollybutt about our objectives for the plantation, Woollybutt made recommendations about the most desirable species and plantation areas.

Of the total area of the property of 36 ha, a total of 24 ha will be planted, leaving a substantial area along the creek to retain remnant trees. In addition, the areas on the top of the ridge at the south-west end of the block are considered to be too exposed and have insufficient soil depth to support a commercial crop of trees. These areas will be left for re-vegetation purposes. In addition, area must be left for access roads and firebreaks in and around the plantations.

The overall layout of the plantations is based on the planting of three main species (Tasmanian Blue Gum, Spotted Gum, Yellow Stringybark), plus some assorted species for special purposes (River She-Oak, Silver Wattle). Woollybutt would have preferred only two main species, but three were chosen because of the three distinct environments on the block.
