The Blue Range Close site is located between Taggerty and Thornton, about 120 km north-east of Melbourne. It is at the foothills of the Blue Range, which is on the north-western border of the Great Dividing Range running down the east coast of Australia [location map and site map].
The block runs north-south, with the Blue Range running parallel to the east of the block. The photo below, taken from the western edge, shows the Blue Range in the background. The boundaries of the block are shown as a black border.
The block is essentially divided into three areas, as shown by the regions A, B and C above. Region A on the south of the block is a relatively steep (20 degrees) section, falling from a ridge line down to the creek. Region B contains the creek, which runs from the south-east corner, through the middle of the block and then down the western border. This region is relatively heavily covered with remnant trees, mainly narrow-leaved peppermint, teatree and some deciduous trees on the western border. Region C on the north of the creek is undulating paddocks, bounded on the north by an existing heavily forested area on a neighbouring property. The two dams on the block are located just above the letter B and just below the letter C on the photo above. An aerial photo of the block shows the actual size of the three regions, the extent of existing vegetation and the location of the dams.
